EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE

WHAT IS EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE (USING WORDS AND LANGUAGE)?

Expressive language is the use of words, sentences, gestures, symbols, signing and writing to convey meaning and messages to others.  Expressive language skills include being able to label objects in the environment, describe actions and events, put words together in sentences, use grammar, retell a story, answer questions and write short story.

WHY IS EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE (USING WORDS AND LANGUAGE) IMPORTANT?

Expressive language is important because it enables children to be able to express their wants and needs, thoughts and ideas points of view, develop their use of language in writing and engage in successful interactions with others.

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO SUPPORT EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE

  • Give the child extra time to express themselves and try not to interrupt
  • Create opportunities for the child to talk and try not to anticipate their needs before they have had chance to ask
  • Use visual aids to help conversation with the child e.g. photos, picture books, objects

HERE ARE SOME GAMES TO HELP:

Play games to practice using new vocabulary or grammatical features:

I went shopping and bought… (items from the target topic e.g. food, home items etc.)

What's in the bag?
You will need:

A bag or a pillow case & assorted toys or objects

Take turns taking an object out of the bag and naming it. You can fill the bag with specific vocabulary the child may be learning for example, animals.

Pictures

Show the child a picture, when they describe it or name it they can post it.
